Iconic Revamp | Fox Mini Micron Multicolour

The old-school budget-priced classic gets a colourful upgrade, resulting in the perfect blend of nostalgia and innovation

We’ll start with the good news—and the absolutely bloody brilliant news. The good news is there’s a new Mini Micron from Fox, going by the name ‘Mini Micron Multicolour’. The absolutely bloody brilliant news? It’s loaded with tech and retails for a measly £22. Twenty-two pounds. We’ll repeat that for a third time: TWENTY-TWO POUNDS! Now, depending on which cosmetic camp you sit in, you may love it or loathe it. Fox hasn’t deviated from the Mini’s classic ’90s design, keeping that slim, slender silhouette, with what now looks like even bigger ears (albeit this new model now has an LED on each this time). If that shape still screams, ‘You couldn’t afford the more rounded, feature-packed 1993 SX so you settled for the Mini,’ (or, today's equivalent, the RX+) then this isn’t for you. But if, like Tom Maker, you love the look, read on—we’re about to break down exactly what you can expect from this latest iteration of the Micron family.

1. Bright New Multicolour LEDs
As its name suggests, the standout feature of the new Mini Micron Multicolour is its vibrant, adjustable LEDs. You can now switch between Green, Blue, Red, and Orange to suit your mood—or match your indicator head colour. There are also now two super-high-visibility LEDs positioned at the top of both ears (rather than just one on the left, as was the case with the originals). Is two better than one? In terms of performance, probably not. But did having a double handle on a Shimano 5010 Baitrunner in the late ’90s make you a better angler? No. It just looked cooler. And that’s the point here, too.

2. Fine-Tuned Control
Unlike the Mini Micron of old, the Multicolour version lets you adjust volume, tone, and sensitivity via the three soft-touch buttons. There are four tone settings, two sensitivity levels, and—thankfully—four volume options. Unlike the originals, which were so quiet even a bat would’ve struggled, these ones can actually make themselves heard. Which is fortunate, because, as you’d expect from an alarm that’s only £2 north of £20, there’s no receiver option.

3. D-Tec Sensing System
This is a big upgrade. Fox has equipped it with their tried-and-tested D-Tec Sensing System and roller wheel technology to ensure accurate, reliable bite detection. The improved sensing setup registers every genuine movement on your line—without the nuisance of false bleeps. Fox, we salute you.

4. Durable and Practical Design
The Mini Micron’s build quality remains as solid as ever. As you’ll have noticed—and as we’ve hinted a couple of times—the design stays true to its high-ear heritage. Pair those with new rubber inlays, which grip and protect your rod, and you’ve got a setup that doesn’t need additional snag ears to keep things secure during savage takes. Add in a simple on/off toggle switch, a knurled locking collar, and a robust, weather-resistant body, and you’ve got another Micron built to last—whether you’re on the gravelly banks of Linear’s B1 or living and fishing off a boat on the Orient, Darrell Peck style.

5. Power to the Accessories
Okay, so it’s not receiver compatible like its more expensive brother, the Mini Micron X, but the Multicolour does have a couple of aces tucked inside those oversized ears. Firstly, the crisp Piezo speaker remains the star of the show when it comes to sound. Secondly, there’s now a 2.5mm power-out socket, allowing you to connect illuminated bite indicators such as Fox’s Illuminated Swinger.

   What We Love

1. Price

At £22.00, the Mini Micron Multicolour is extremely affordable, and all things considered, it has to be the best budget bite alarm on the market right now.

2. Multicolour LEDs
The ability to change between multiple LED colours adds a nice customisable touch.

3. Tom Maker Loves Them
Sure, he’s using the X model, but in essence, there’s very little between that and this one (more on that below). And if they’re good enough for Tom Maker, they’re definitely good enough for us!

   What We Don’t

1. No Receiver Compatibility
Unlike the pricier model X, the Mini Micron Multicolour isn’t compatible with a receiver system.

2. Battery Type
We’re being picky… It uses small N-type/LR1 batteries, which can be harder to find than the more common AAA batteries used in other alarms.

3. Its Shape
Like value, cosmetics are highly subjective. We love the shape for its nostalgia-inducing charm—but, personally, we’re not fully sold. We’d much rather see something closer in style to Fox’s RX model.
